Google announced the desire for publishers to use a new set of meta tags to indicate whether a post is original or syndicated.
Here’s how it works…

If you’re doing a summary of another publisher’s post, then include this meta tag in the HEAD section of your HTML.

If you are the original author of the content, put this in the HEAD section of your HTML.
<meta name="original-source" content="http://www.example.com/title_of_your_original_content">
I’ve had the pleasure of doing the programming and SEO for a sports news organization, and can attest to the rampant problems pertaining to content theft.  We set up Google Alerts on certain keyword phrases and it never failed that other site pilfered their content.  Will this new tag help with this problem?  I don’t know for sure, but I think it would be prudent to include this tag in your posts if you are the original content author.
